Ocean–Atmosphere Interaction Science

About this portal

Oceanatmos is a science-dissemination portal that gathers results from multi-institutional research projects devoted to ocean–atmosphere interaction. Each project featured here is carried out jointly by several research institutions, and this space makes their data and findings accessible to the scientific community and the public.

Why ocean–atmosphere interaction matters

The ocean and the atmosphere form a coupled system, continuously exchanging heat, moisture and momentum. Concentrated at the air–sea interface, these exchanges drive everything from the coastal breeze to the global circulation — and are decisive for climate, weather forecasting and the formation of convective systems and extreme precipitation events.

Projects

CONVECT

Forecasting of Convective Systems: an Integrated Analysis of Numerical Modeling, Radar and Satellites. CONVECT studies the microphysics of precipitation in convective systems using a network of OTT Parsivel optical disdrometers, which measure the drop size distribution (DSD) and the 32×32 spectrum (drop diameter × fall velocity) of rainfall. These data help calibrate radar and satellite rainfall estimates and improve the understanding of extreme events.
